fussy eater turned foodie

El Capo

El Capo is a Mexican restaurant and bar that has become a staple part of Tariff Street in Manchester’s infamous Northern Quarter. Albeit, the bar at weekends is one of the places to be but what is even better than the prospect of a busy tequila fuelled night out is that Monday night is steak night! The offer includes a 16oz (yes, it is huge) steak with any two sides of your choosing, plus a bottle of red or white house wine. They also do £1 Taco Tuesdays and 50p Wing-it Wednesdays, if that is more your thing.

So as it was Monday and I was with my fellow carnivorous friend, we decided to go for the steak deal. I was not entirely sure what to expect but when a huge platter of steak and sides appeared at the table, I knew I was in for a treat. The steak was well rested and cooked perfectly to our requirements. Although slightly fatty, it was tender and not in the slightest bit chewy. The steak melted in the mouth and had so much natural flavour that it did not require any additional sauces or condiments.

The Steak is served alongside a small house salad which makes a nice accompaniment but you also get to choose 2 sides of your pleasing. We went for the extremely decadent and equally luxurious chilli cheese fries and the El Capo special slaw. Both were delicious and a nice size to share.

A bottle of house wine is included in the reasonable price of £25. We opted for white over red and decided to order some cocktails as it was happy hour. Between 5pm and 7pm cocktails are half price and they offer a range of other happy hour offers that are worth checking out more information over on their instagram and website). As I am not currently drinking alcohol my friend had to tackle the wine herself, along with the ‘La Esposa Tashita’; which she described as the “tastiest cocktail she had ever had”. I on the other hand requested a sweet but not sickly mocktail and the bar tender delivered an incredible, flavoursome array of watermelon, mint and lime.

My one complaint however would have to be that the service speed was quite slow and scatty, which really irritated the table next to us but I put this down to the fact that they suddenly had a lot of big tables appear and the bar setting environment makes food service a bit more challenging. The young servers were lovely and friendly though and we were sufficiently looked after.

Overall, I have visited El Capo a few times for both food and drinks and have yet to leave disappointed. I would definitely recommend a weekend visit for some great Mexican food and margaritas but if you are looking for some tasty bargains with a consistently great atmosphere, then midweek is the time to go.
