fussy eater turned foodie

Cafe at the Museum

One thing I have found since living back home after university and working in Manchester city centre is that there is a heck of a lot of restaurants about. We have an eating out culture and a vast choice throughout the city and suburbs. Unfortunately, as I work at the top end of Oxford Road near all the universities I find that most choices are fast, not necessarily healthy and too student hangover cure orientated. However, the cafe at the museum breaks this mould and when I was invited back to try their new menu I jumped at the chance.

Now this is a casual place, perfect for lunch for students, families and professionals alike. It can please those in a rush who just want a quick salad or those with a longer lunch hour who want a heartier, fresh and delicious meal. You do have to queue to order but I enjoyed this as I got to view all of the salad and proteins at the salad bar before deciding (and I must admit this was a tough decision, could I not eat them all?!).

IMG_1812I decided on the raw detox salad, fruit/nut couscous salad and the house-made slaw alongside smoked salmon and a boiled egg. Now the portions were deceptive, my salad came on a side plate yet it was stacked high and I almost struggled to finish it. My friend ordered the halloumi and bean flat bread which was huge and defeated her and we shared some crispy yet well cooked sweet potato fries. For the size of portion you receive the prices are more than reasonable and the salads and numerous vegetarian options are far from boring or repetitive.

Alongside this the service was friendly, I had a refill on my delicious vanilla cacao loose leaf tea and our tables were cleared in a timely but not rushed manner.

And if all this healthy eating isn’t for you, there are lots of ‘comfort food’ options that will satisfy any palate- I mean who can resist a fish finger sandwich?! Alongside a more than tempting dessert counter and some helpful advice from staff as to which is the best cake to break your diet with…

Overall, I admit this is not fine dining and it does not pretend to be but if your in the area for any reason I would definitely recommend you checking this place out for either a tasty tea/coffee, a healthy or hearty lunch or even a delicious slice of cake. Plus they do 10% off for students!
